Where Sycamore Island is

Where Sycamore Island is

Sycamore Island lies in the Allegheny River near Blawnox, northeast of Pittsburgh. The Allegheny Land Trust (ALT) lists its address as Sycamore Island Beach, Blawnox, PA 15238, but that address does not change the key detail for planning: you can reach the island only by boat.

The island covers more than 14 acres today. Its area has grown from just over 6 acres in 1809, partly through changes in river sedimentation and topography. Silver maple, sycamore and eastern cottonwood form its rare hardwood floodplain forest canopy.

Planning the trip from Greensburg

Planning the trip from Greensburg

To plan a visit from Greensburg, first work out how you will get to a boat launch, then confirm that river conditions suit the crossing. Greensburg's three-star Inn at Mountainview is a starting point for the trip, but the island itself has no road access.

Harmarville backchannel access is a route to downstream islands, including Sycamore Island. Harmarville Public Boat Launch has a public parking lot and informational signage and is managed by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

These access points do not establish a complete itinerary from Greensburg or a recommended visit duration. Plan the approach to the launch separately, and allow time to prepare for a boat-only crossing. For a separate outing, a day trip to Oakland Square Historic District is another option from Greensburg.

Access and seasonal conditions

Access and seasonal conditions

Safe access depends on weather and water conditions, so check both before setting out. ALT advises wearing a personal flotation device while traveling to the island and wearing a wetsuit if the water is below 60 degrees.

Once ashore, stay on trails to avoid poison ivy and leave no trace. ALT says public access depends on visitors helping care for the property, and it prohibits removing plants, wildlife, minerals or historical and cultural artifacts—including firewood and rocks.

Camping is allowed only on Sycamore Island. You need a reservation through Hipcamp and a completed permit submitted to ALT’s Stewardship Team before your stay.

What to check before setting out

What to check before setting out

Confirm the launch and crossing plan, review conditions on the river, and make sure you have the required safety gear. There is no standard public opening schedule, admission fee or recommended visit duration for the island, so check the Allegheny Land Trust’s official site before you go.

The island is also a habitat area, not a place to collect natural or historical objects. It is important floodplain-forest habitat with a “high significance” ranking within the Allegheny River Biological Diversity Area Natural Heritage Area.
